How I Organize Reading Groups
I took guided reading professional development courses last semester based on Jan Richardson’s Guided Reading lessons and here’s what I got out of them:
The Gist
- Guided reading groups students by reading level (preferably Fountas and Pinnell)
- Students read aloud at the same time, but not at the same pace during groups
- Teacher lessons focus on fluency, decoding, word skills, or comprehension depending on reading level
- Jan Richardson’s videos are really helpful (available through Scholastic with a password from her book).
